Scoliosis describes an abnormal, side-to-side, curvature of the spine. The spinal curve may develop as a single curve (shaped like the letter C) or as two curves (shaped like the letter S). In children and teenagers, scoliosis often does not have any noticeable symptoms and may not be noticeable until the curve has progressed significantly. The two most common forms of scoliosis are degenerative scoliosis and idiopathic scoliosis (adolescent).

To adults Scoliosis can be extremely painful.

Most causes of scoliosis are unknown but it is often associated with connective tissue disorders as well as neurological disorders. Scoliosis is not caused by a child having poor posture or carrying too much weight in a backpack.

There are several common physical symptoms that may indicate scoliosis.

Most typically, symptoms of scoliosis may include one or several of the following:

  • One shoulder is higher than the other
  • One shoulder blade sticks out more than the other
  • One side of the rib cage appears higher than the other
  • One hip appears higher or more prominent than the other
  • Asymmetric size or location of breast in females
  • The waist appears uneven
  • The body tilts to one side
  • One leg may appear shorter than the other
  • Slow nerve action (in some cases)
