Degenerative disc disease is a misunderstood condition, despite being one of the leading sources of back pain and neck pain. This condition is not actually a disease -- it is part of the normal aging of the spine. In this condition, the discs in the spine (the pillow-like pads between the bones) lose their cushioning. When this happens, it can cause persistent pain in the lower back, legs, neck or arms.

Degenerative disc disease refers to a condition in which a compromised disc causes low back pain. Lumbar degenerative disc disease sometimes occurs as the result of a twisting injury to the low back, but can also be caused by normal wear and tear.

Symptoms of Degenerative disc disease can include:

  • Chronic low back pain which can sometimes radiates to the hips
  • Pain in the buttocks or thighs while walking
  • Sporadic tingling or weakness through the knees
  • Similar pain may be felt or may increase while sitting, bending, lifting, and twisting. Chronic neck pain can also be caused in the upper spine, with pain radiating to the shoulders, arms and hands.
